Wrapped rewind
Spotify Wrapped #1s of years past
Hey y’all,
The highly-anticipated release of Spotify Wrapped — the assortment of lists that define our music taste over the past year — is (probably) a few days away, but I wanted to take a quick look at my lists of years past. My Wrapped journey started in 2018 when I, for a reason I can’t remember, thought the streaming service was superior to my family’s Apple Music plan and subscribed.
A person’s Top 10 songs emotionally summarizes their year, so how vulnerable of me to share my #1s:
2018: “Crash Test Rating” - Remo Drive
2019: “In Your Head” - Nilüfer Yanya
2020: “Motorola” - Miloe
2021: “gf haircut” - dad sports
2022: “BARLEY ANYMORE”- WHY NOT
2023: “Honey” - Samia
I can pin-point the exact thoughts I had while listening to each of these songs on repeat: juvenile angst, delusional longing, COVID coping, desperate pinning for answers that would never come, satisfaction of a genuinely “over it” moment, and simultaneous apathy and acceptance. That’s pretty beautiful. Or, put another way; a wave of adrenaline > mania > ease > depression > pleasure > introspection.
ANOTHER THING: Can we take a moment to talk about how Taylor Swift has been on my Top 5 artists almost every year. She was #1 in 2023, and while I did pull up her catalogue prior to reviewing her show at U.S. Bank Stadium last summer, she certainly wasn’t an artist I turned to at any other point. So being the occasional petty thing I am, I pulled up Apple Music to listen to the Tortured Poets Department. My one-time listen left me irritated and unimpressed. My fav review came from Laura Molloy at NME: “Swift’s 11th studio album is surprisingly flat and, at times, cringeworthy.” If the pop star appears anywhere on my list this year…
I digress!
So what’s will my top songs this year be?! ……..
My 2024 Wrapped predictions:
1. “Never Fucked Up Once” - Military Gun
2. “Love On the Outside” - Wishy
3. “Can’t Feel Me” - Heart to Gold
4. “Steamroller” - feeble little horse
5. “Starburster” - Fontaines D.C.
I can’t wait for the burst of adrenaline I’ll feel when I open Spotify — or click on an Instagram story and see a slideshow. It’ll be a needed little hit of euphoria.
